Two TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup Toyota GR Yaris RZ Cup finish in the top ten of the overall classification of the rally, on tarmac.
Double celebration for Dani Berdomás and Brais Mirón (Breogán Group) after the sixth round of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup: with the win in the Vidreiro Rally, they climb up from the third position to the top of the overall classification in the single-brand cup organized by Toyota Spain, Toyota Caetano Portugal and Motor & Sport Institute (MSi). A triumph helped by the abandonment of Sergi Francolí and Xavier Moreno (CSM Automoció), because of a run off the track after a puncture, just when they were leading the race organized by the Automóvil Club Marinha Grande.
Berdomás (Breogán Group) was the first leader of the event after setting the best time in the timed section that opened the rally on Friday, and went to bed as leader after the first stage, one second ahead of Sergi Francolí (CSM Automoció). But the Catalan driver set a great time in the first special stage on Saturday, 16.74 km long, 19 seconds ahead of his rival, Dani Berdomás, to take the solo lead.
The Breogán Group driver took TC4 and TC6 (the fifth section was neutralized due to an incident), so that before the seventh timed section he ceded 8.2 seconds to the leader. It was there, in San Pedro de Moel 1, where the decisive event of the race took place: the abandonment of Francolí, which left the Galician driver with a comfortable lead of 33.3 seconds over Javi Villa and Enrique Alonso (Asturhíbrido). Even so, Villa won the last stage of the day, with Dani Berdomás (Breogán Group) taking it easy; despite losing 14.7 seconds, he sealed his victory with a lead of 18.6 seconds over the second-placed driver.
Dani Berdomás (Breogán Group) also added 4 more points to the 21 points awarded for winning the rally, for having been the fastest in as many stages. Sergi Francolí, who won two stages, adds two points that minimize the damage. Thus, both drivers are tied at 103 points, but Berdomás is the new leader, due to the greater number of victories (3 to 2). The remaining extra point at stake goes to Javi Villa, who now has 67 points in the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup and remains sixth overall.
The Ricardo Costa-Rui Vilaça duo (Macedo & Macedo GTW Racing) had the honor of closing the podium of the rally as the best Portuguese team, securing a fourth place in the overall classification. The fourth classified of the event, Alberto Monarri and Sergio Fernández (IPPON Motor Vallés), also maintain their position in the overall (fifth), as well as the Pedro Lago Vieira-Ricardo Faria duo (Toyota Caetano Auto), fifth of the rally and seventh of the TGRIC, by adding 12 more points to reach a total of 58. Joan Sabater and Gerard Taberner (CSM Automoció) finished in sixth position and were the best Junior.
Bruno Bulacia, co-driven by Axel Coronado (CSM Automoció), was one of the rally's victims: the 21-year-old Bolivian retired due to mechanical issues and has lost second place overall, although he is still the best Junior driver (under 24 years old). Other notable withdrawals in this Vidreiro Rally were due to the accident suffered by Miguel Campos and Carla Salvat (Macedo & Macedo GTW Racing) and the abandonment of Antonio Sainz and Carlos Riesgo (Kobe Motor), also due to mechanical issues. José Carlos Mulero and Carlos Fernández (Labasa) also withdrew on the first day, but returned in the second stage, as part of the Super Rally, and with the seventh final position they secured 9 points to move up to tenth place in the overall classification of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup.
The Toyota GR Yaris RZ Cup has again shown a great potential, this time in a Rally Vidreiro held entirely on asphalt. Not in vain, two of the participants of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup have been classified among the top ten overall, in what was the last event of the Portuguese Rally Championship 2023. The single-brand Cup with the GR Yaris continues with the Rally de la Nucía, on November 3 and 4, again on tarmac, to finish on gravel, two weeks later, with the Rally de Pozoblanco, both qualifying events for the Spanish Rally Superchampionship.
