For this season, the number of entries is expected to double over 2022.
In just over 10 days a new season of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup, the single-brand cup organized by Toyota Spain, Toyota Caetano Portugal and Motor & Sport Institute (MSi) with the Toyota GR Yaris RZ Cup as the protagonist, will begin.
The 2023 edition will be the second edition, which is promising to be more exciting than the first one due to the high number of registered teams, which is expected to almost double compared to 2022. In addition, drivers from five different nationalities are also expected to participate this season: Spain, Portugal, France, Andorra and Bolivia.
The season will start next March 11, on the occasion of the Serras de Fafe Rally. This is one of the most important events in Portugal, which usually has a high number of spectators, who are drawn by the spectacular nature of its gravel tracks. In this scenario, the four-wheel drive of the Toyota GR Yaris RZ will once again be a differential element among the different promotional cups participating in the event.
The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup will once again be one of the benchmark promotional cups, due to the new features introduced in three fundamental aspects: an increase in the prize money, technical improvements that will make the Toyota GR Yaris RZ Cup even more competitive, both on gravel and on asphalt, and a new calendar, more in line with the interests of the participating teams.
It is noteworthy that the Rally Princesa de Asturias, in its 60th anniversary will be a mixed-surface rally and therefore, a technical and sporting challenge for teams and drivers. A total of eight rallies will be held again, equally distributed across Spain and Portugal.
In addition to new ventilation and cooling systems for the engine compartment and brakes, the technical aspects include the new straight-tooth gearbox and Pirelli's incorporation as tire supplier. The Italian brand has vast experience in competition and it is the tire supplier for the WRC1s participating in the World Rally Championship (WRC).
MSi, although the 2023 season has not yet started, is already testing for 2024, hence the Toyota GR Yaris RZ Cup has served as car '0' last weekend at the Rallysprint Riskmedia Corpa, held in Madrid. This event was also participated by the Asturian driver Javi Villa (Asturhíbrido), registered in the Cup this year and who was competing for the first time in a rally on gravel.
In Madrid, the experienced driver Isaac Vera (Toyota Kobe Motor) also made his debut at the controls of the Toyota GR Yaris RZ Cup. This last weekend of February, several registered drivers got behind the wheel of their respective GR Yaris RZ to prepare for the season, including José Carlos Mulero and his co-driver Carlos Fernández (Labasa Toyota), who won the overall victory in the Villa de Félix Timed Stage. Finally, Dani Berdomás along with his inseparable co-driver Brais Mirón, took part in the Vieira do Minho Rallye, held in Portugal, where they had a very good performance despite the bad weather.
These are only some of the drivers who land this year in the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup, which we hope will be even more fun and exciting.
