The Toyota GR Yaris RZ Cup meets the drivers' expectations in its first rally season.
From Toyota Spain, Toyota Caetano Portugal and Motor & Sport Institute (MSi) there is no other way to define how successful the first edition of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup has been. It is the only single-brand cup that is disputed with a 4-wheel drive car, a distinctive element that enables drivers to compete at top level.
With around nine entries in each race, competitiveness has been the norm in each of the rallies that have been held this year, both on gravel and tarmac. The fact that this cup is held on both surfaces is an incentive for the drivers and a technical challenge for all the participating teams.
A total of eight rallies, including the World Rally Championship (WRC) events, have put the performance of the Toyota GR Yaris to the test, demonstrating its reliability in really difficult conditions.
Right from the start, Miguel Campos (Inside Motor) and Ricardo Costa (Macedo & Macedo GTW Racing) proved to be the fastest and most consistent drivers, until the arrival of Sergi Francolí (CSM Automoció), who proved to be extremely competitive from the very first kilometers. These three drivers were joined by Dani Berdomás (Grupo Breogán), also one of the fastest, with his victory in the Rally Reino de León. All four drivers have been battling it out at every race since the middle of the season to reach the Viana do Castelo Rally with a chance of winning the Cup. In the end, the title was won by the Catalan driver of CSM Automoció, with just three points difference with Miguel Campos (Inside Motor).
The fight was also intense between Víctor Calisto (Inside Motor), Fran Cima (Asturhíbrido) and Germán Gómez (Escudería Surco), who were very consistent throughout the year. Rubén Muñoz (CSM Automoció) and Oriol Comabella (Team's Motor) went from less to more as their performance adapted to the Toyota GR Yaris with every passing kilometer. These drivers were joined by Kevin Reiman (KRS), João Fernando Ramos (Caetano Auto) and Pedro Lago (Caetano Auto). This latter proved to be tremendously competitive in the rallies he took part in, setting very outstanding times.
The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup, which put an end to this 2022 with the Rallyshow Comunidad de Madrid-RACE ( a non-scoring event), will return on March 11, 2023 with one of the most spectacular and attractive events that take place in the Iberian Peninsula: the Rally of Fafe. The calendar has been almost completely modified for next season, as it includes 5 new events, while the Terra da Auga Rally, the Princesa de Asturias (possibly a mixed event) and the Vidreiro Rally will be repeated. The year will close with the novelty of the Rally La Nucia, part of the Spanish Rally Superchampionship.
The improvements made to the Toyota GR Yaris will make it even more competitive, if at all possible. In particular, these include: two large air inlets in the hood to aid cooling and the option of introducing a straight-tooth gearbox, which is a truly differential element.
The prizes offered to participants in 2023 for taking part in the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup will increase to 300,000 € in addition to a special prize for the best junior driver, the best female driver and the best senior driver. They will each receive an additional €3,000 at the end of the season. The winner of the Cup will also have the chance to test a Toyota Rally 2 when it is released on the market.
All in all, the single-brand cup organized by Toyota Spain, Toyota Caetano Portugal and MSi will once again be a big incentive for drivers and teams in 2023. As of now, car reservations and the right of registration are available on request.
