Madrid confirms the successful season of the first edition of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup.
The Rallyshow Comunidad de Madrid-RACE, held on Saturday, December 17, was the last event on the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup calendar. As required by the rules, the presence of the drivers registered in the competition was compulsory. The event it did not score points for the championship, so some of the drivers made the most of their co-driver's seat to take on different guests, in a day with a festive atmosphere.
A 1.1-kilometer gravel and tarmac track was designed in the stadium area of the Jarama circuit. The drivers had to complete two rounds in a head-to-head competition. Despite the sunshine, the terrain was very slippery and muddy due to the rain fallen in previous days.
Early in the morning, the qualifying rounds were held, the only ones held individually, which were to determine the four drivers who would go on to the final round. Sergi Francolí (CSM Automoció) set the best time; second was Dani Berdomás (Grupo Breogán), followed by Fran Cima (Asturhíbrido), who reappeared after being absent in the last events, and Miguel Campos (Inside Motor) closed the group.
After this qualifying round, Rubén Muñoz (CSM Automoció), Víctor Calisto (Inside Motor), Oriol Comabella (Team's Motor) and Ricardo Costa (Macedo & Macedo GTW Racing) were eliminated.
In the semifinals, Sergi Francolí (CSM Automoció) and Fran Cima (Asturhíbrido) went head to head, while Dani Berdomás (Grupo Breogán) faced Miguel Campos (Inside Motor). Francolí was the winner of the first confrontation and Campos was the winner of the second one.
Thus, the grand final of the Rallyshow Comunidad de Madrid-RACE, which was played to the best of the two rounds, was going to be a unique opportunity to witness the fight between the winner of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup and the runner-up, in a nice duel. With the spectators in the stands, the action began, and it was Sergi Francolí (CSM Automoció) who won the first round.
The result was repeated in the second round, which gave the victory to Francolí. Fran Cima (Asturhíbrido), due to the good time set in his face-off with Sergi Francolí (CSM Automoció), took the third step of the podium.
During the event it was possible to see at the Jarama Circuit, for the first time, two units -one on gravel and on tarmac-, of the Toyota GR Yaris RZ Cup which will compete next season in the Cup, and which strongly appealed the drivers and teams present at the Madrid event.
At the Saturday’s gala dinner -organized at the Motor & Sport Institute- the final awards and a commemorative plaque were given to all the participating teams in the first edition of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup.
The TOYOTA Cup will be back in March 2023, with a calendar of eight races: 4 will be held in Portugal and 4 in Spain. It will once again be a mixed championship, with gravel and tarmac rallies that will put the talent of the drivers to the test. All the information for entering the single-brand cup, organized by Toyota Spain, Toyota Caetano Portugal and MSI, is already available on the website.
