The rally scores for the World Rally Championship (WRC) and is the toughest of the second half of the season.
The Rally RACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada - Rally de España, which takes place on October 20 and 21, is the seventh of the eight qualifying rounds of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup. This rally, which belongs to the World Rally Championship (WRC) calendar, is another of the great challenges of the season, due to the challenging and technical stages that are part of the route.
Sergi Francolí and María Salvo (CSM Automoció) start out as favorites, due to their victory in the last rally and the performance they have shown on tarmac. They are the couple that has won the most stages on this surface and they have been the only team that has achieved more than one victory this season. These results have allowed the CSM Automoció driver to get into the fight for the title. Now there are four participants who aspire to win this first edition of the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup.
Ricardo Costa (Macedo & Macedo GTW Racing), who dropped out of the Vidreiro Rally despite being the only driver on the podium in all the previous rounds, needs to look for a new victory, as he has gradually seen the gap in the general classification cut. Although he is still the leader, he is now only one point ahead of Dani Berdomás (Grupo Breogán), who will not be contesting the Catalonian race for professional reasons.
Miguel Campos (Inside Motor), third in the overall classification and four points behind Costa, will have a new chance this time to become the leader. On the other hand, the Asturian Fran Cima, after his exclusion from the Rally Princesa de Asturias, has virtually lost all options for the title.
The rest of the entries in the one-make cup organized by Toyota Spain, Toyota Caetano Portugal and MSI are: Victor Calisto, seventh overall with 43 points, Ruben Muñoz (CSM Automoció) and Oriol Comabella (Team's Motor), who return to the wheel of the Toyota GR Yaris RZ Cup after his absence in the last rally.
The RACC Rally, of which the drivers registered in the Cup will only participate in the first of the three sections that make up the event, has 118.92 kilometers timed, divided into 8 special stages to be held on Friday 21, the longest being Les Garrigues Altes, with over 22 kilometers.
The start ceremony will take place on Thursday 20th in Salou and the assistance area will be located, as usual, in Port Aventura World. This year and following the absence of restrictions due to the pandemic, a large number of spectators are expected.
