Ricardo Costa (Macedo & Macedo GTW Racing) and Miguel Campos, tied for the overall lead.
The Rally RACC Catalunya-Costa Daurada - Rally of Spain, the seventh event in the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup, and scoring in the World Rally Championship (WRC), has shortened the gap between the drivers who aspire to the title in the new promotion cup with the competitive Toyota GR Yaris RZ Cup.
After the ceremonial start that took place in Salou on Thursday afternoon, which was attended by a large number of people, the action began on Friday morning. Sergi Francolí (CSM Automoció), who was racing at home and claiming his status as favorite, was the one who set the best time in the first two stages. But Miguel Campos (Inside Motor), who was very comfortable on the Catalan roads answered back by scoring the third and fourth stages of the day.
After the first four special stages (of eight in total), Francolí and Campos were separated by only 6 tenths, at the wheel of their respective GR Yaris. Behind, Ricardo Costa (Macedo & Macedo GTW Racing) tried to keep up with the pace set by the first two classified and was third, 19 seconds behind.
After passing through the mythical assistance of the rally located in Port Aventura World, Sergi Francolí (CSM Automoció) would be the one who was going to adapt better to the difficult conditions of the sections, since these had many wet spots caused by the light rain that fell during the day. So much so that the Catalan driver scored the best time in all the stages of the afternoon, an important fact, since, as established in the regulations, an additional point is scored when timed stages are won.
Miguel Campos (Inside Motor) was definitely unhooked in the sixth section, losing 23 seconds to the leader, and gave for good a second place that equals points with Ricardo Costa (Macedo & Macedo GTW Racing), which this time finished in third place and returned to the podium after his withdrawal in the Vidreiro Rally.
Rubén Muñoz (CSM Automoció) and Oriol Comabella (Team's Motor), who was again the youngest driver registered in the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Iberian Cup, held a nice fight for fourth place, until Oriol abandoned in the sixth stage, due to a run off the track. The classification of the rally was closed by the veteran Portuguese driver Víctor Calisto, who, with his fifth place, is ahead of Germán Gómez, who was not registered in this event.
After seven rounds and with two results to be deducted from each driver after the last round, Ricardo Costa (Macedo & Macedo GTW Racing) and Miguel Campos (Inside Motor) are tied on points at the top of the overall classification. Meanwhile, Sergi Francolí (CSM Automoció) is third after overtaking Dani Berdomás, who is now fourth. The title will be disputed by these four drivers in the last round of the one-make cup organized by Toyota Spain, Toyota Caetano Portugal and MSI. The Viana do Castelo Rally will be held in Portugal on November 25th and 26th.
